About Kavlick

Forming Fredericksburg, Virginia in the Spring of 2021, founding members Luna Kavlick and Sam “Sag” Gardner met through an unlikely connection, landing them in a small practice space in Sam’s father’s basement.

These basement sessions would soon prove to be a breeding ground for expression, quickly becoming weekly practices as the entrance of bass player and Sag’s former bandmate, Carlos Quinones, brought solid low end and blunt feedback.

In an early open mic night at The Rec Center in Downtown FXBG, standing in the crowd was Adam Nienke. Showing keen interest in joining his second band, the trio became a dual fronted quartet, as Nienke and Kavlick also had musical history together.

Come winter the following year, Kavlick Gardner, Nienke, and Luna’s brother “Nik” would find themselves renting a house up the road together.

The space would later be known as The Kavlick House and would nurture any notion of creativity with its multiple air conditioned practice spaces, one for Kavlick and the other for Nienke’s other band, “Skellebox” (formerly Stoned Ape Theory).

Floating under previous aliases such as Scut, Sap Fawn, and the even lesser, Moray Peak, the band finally settled with simply “Kavlick” as a final name. In 2022, Kavlick would find themselves to be a working band.

From headlining The Richmond Music Hall, to playing for Tommy Tutone at BAMM fest in Colonial Beach, VA, to vibrantly fueled house shows at the Kavlick house itself.

The band’s fan base slowly began to swell thanks to the loyalty and enthusiasm of the surrounding tight knit friend group. With an undeniable 90’s sound, the band also included notable desert and hard rock influences.

Floating somewhere between early Pearl Jam and Black Sabbath at times while Korn and Queens Of The Stone Age in others.

Kavlick’s next chapter and new line up.

Freak Fest ’23 in Partlow, VA would mark the last show including both Quinones and Nienke. The departure was bittersweet with Quinones being stationed to Georgia and Nienke pursuing other musical endeavors.

Before the year’s end, swift work had been made to fill a new line-up.

Enter another former musical partner to Sag was James King on lead guitar and then bassist Owen Devine, in response to an ad. Settling more into a solid heavier “Kavlick” sound, the rebound of the band was well anticipated and introduced its new members in a packed house show at nowhere better than the Kavlick house with Luna herself fronting the band.

Feedback to the show was overwhelmingly positive with high support and guest overflow.

A second show brought the band to Hard Times Cafe as a supporting act, entertaining the most condensed crowd to the date before a brief hiatus.

Taking a step back, Kavlick had the clear target in mind to focus on a proper debut album as well as Nik Kavlick finally being brought in as the band’s manager. Between July 13-14, 2024, the band stepped into studio with Eric Kluxen at FXBG Public Radio to record a 14 song album, later to be mixed and mastered by engineer Rocco Guarino (Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver).

The first single, “Exhibit”, was released two months later on September 14th 2024, with a second single, “Spinnin’ Top Motel”, on October 12th 2024. The debut album “Retrieval” was released November 2nd 2024.
